It’s the nostalgic collection of electro-funk bangers you never actually heard back in the day, but wish you had: Scattershot’s Extrasexual Behavior gets a 20th-anniversary reissue by Layered Music.

In 2001, electronic musician Jeff Snyder (now the Director of Electronic Music at Princeton University and a highly respected free improviser) created and self-released these original tracks of intense, wild funk, with the conceit that the EP was the soundtrack to a lost 70’s exploitation film. However, this isn’t mere imitation; Snyder’s signature electronic manipulations give it a profile all its own. He chops, twists, and reconstructs material from a stable of talented session musicians, some recorded in 2001 and some newly added for this wider release.

On “The Depraved,” Todd Hill’s deep bassline winds around Rick Flowers’ intricate drumming to create a backbone worthy of the JBs. On “The Meaning of Love,” free-jazz guitarist Scott Field’s incredible solo goes completely bonkers, conjuring a vision of Eddie “Maggot Brain” Hazel with actual maggots in his brain. The deep, dusky sax solo on “The Heat” sounds like the performer has just been injected with horse tranquilizers, while the pounding beat beneath it propels an insanely distorted synth bassline. Extrasexual Behavior makes a strong sonic statement with serious complexity and raw power that still resonates today.
